BEIRUT, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Israel and Lebanon's powerful armed group Hezbollah exchanged artillery and rocket fire on Sunday following the deadliest attack in years by Palestinian gunmen on Israel. Hezbollah on Sunday said it had launched guided rockets and artillery onto three posts in the Shebaa Farms "in solidarity" with the Palestinian people. Israel has held the Shebaa Farms, a 15-square-mile (39-square-km) patch of land, since 1967. A Lebanese security source told Reuters that a tent set up by Hezbollah in the Shebaa Farms had been hit and that Hezbollah fighters had erected a new one. On Saturday, UNIFIL said it had enhanced its presence in southern Lebanon following developments in Israel and Gaza, including its operations to counter rocket launches.

Prosecutors say that a convicted Ponzi schemer that Trump got out of prison defrauded people again. Trump's commutation of Weinstein's sentence was one of his final acts as president. Federal prosecutors said on Wednesday that shortly after Trump helped him get released, Weinstein concocted another scheme. Trump's commutation of Weinstein's sentence led to his release after serving less than eight years of a 24-year sentence. Prosecutors allege it did not take Weinstein very long to get back to defrauding investors.

A convicted Ponzi schemer, whose prison sentence President Donald J. Trump commuted in one of his last official White House acts, is facing new fraud federal charges of bilking investors in a series of phony deals. The man, Eliyahu Weinstein, a former used car salesman from Lakewood, N.J., was serving a 24-year sentence in connection with two schemes, when Mr. Trump freed him from prison in January 2021. One involved defrauding members of his tight-knit Orthodox Jewish community out of more than $200 million. On Wednesday, federal prosecutors in New Jersey charged Mr. Weinstein, 48, along with four other men, with defrauding at least 150 people out of $35 million. “These were brazen and sophisticated crimes that involved multiple conspirators and drew right from Weinstein’s playbook of fraud,” Philip R. Sellinger, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said at a news conference.

The attack took place with Israel on high alert in Jerusalem after a day of violence along the Lebanese and Gaza borders. Israel's military said soldiers had arrived at the scene of a reported collision between Israeli and Palestinian vehicles near the Jewish settlement of Hamra and saw the Israeli car, with three people in it, had been shot up. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting the scene, said: "Vile and heartless terrorists murdered two young sisters."

Now Israel has normalised relations with more Arab states, while Palestinians have grown more isolated and divided. Most world powers consider Israel's settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as illegal. Israel says its West Bank raids targeted militants such as the suspects behind deadly attacks carried out by Palestinians inside Israel last year. "Each area of the West Bank is witnessing some form of armed clashes, but these are not united mass-scale movements," said Tahani Mustafa of the International Crisis Group. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is visiting Israel and the West Bank this week.
